Automation through Shelf-Transporting AGVs

Problem Background

In this client's warehouse, over 300 types of parts are handled, and more than 9 workers move around the warehouse while looking at the slip, picking the target parts. As the work was done manually, there were differences in mistakes and speed, and a significant amount of effort was required for accuracy management and labor management. Moreover, since the warehouse itself was spacious, the routes within the warehouse depended on experience and intuition, creating significant differences in speed between veteran workers and new members.

Implementation Details

Introduced AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles), shelves that can be transported by AGV, and a small-scale WMS (Warehouse Management System). Rather than people moving to the shelves, a system was created where the shelves move to the people. With automatic searching of over 300 types of parts and automatic transportation of shelves to the picking station by AGV, the process of workers looking for relevant parts and moving them was reduced. By constructing a small-scale WMS, it also contributed to reducing the effort required for inventory management and stocktaking.

Solution Details

Data-driven Design

The introduction of AGVs and shelves was not just a mere implementation, but involved analyzing the actual data of the warehouse and optimizing the locations of shelves and parts. The balance between the required number of storage retrievals, installation area, and the number of units introduced was designed. By presenting a preliminary simulation, support was provided to smoothly conduct the internal decision-making process at the customer's end.
